Services

The regular pattern of services in Little Gaddesden is as follows:

Normal Sunday
9:00am — Parish Communion with Sunday School
6:00pm — Evensong (Book of Common Prayer). Third Sunday at Nettleden.
Second Sunday of the Month
9:00am — Café Church (a new, informal type of service)
Fifth Sunday of the Month
9:00am — Joint Parish Communion at one of Little Gaddesden, Great Gaddesden and Nettleden
6:00pm — Evensong (Book of Common Prayer)
Thursday
10:00am — Midweek Holy Communion

There are some exceptions to the regular pattern. For example, Café Church on the second Sunday is sometimes switched with another Sunday for a particular occasion. Also, from time to time, alternative services such as Taizé evensong are held. And, of course, there are additional services during busy festivals such as Christmas and Easter and on other special occasions. So please consult the Services Calendar below to see the services in the coming days. We try to give as much notice as possible of any changes from the usual.

Parish Communion – a Sung Eucharist with Sunday School

Our most frequent Sunday morning service follows the traditional Anglican Communion, or Eucharistic, service. We have traditional hymns and the Gloria and Responses sung to the Patrick Appleford setting of the Mass in E.  The service lasts for almost an hour.  Sunday School for children is held in the adjoining vestry during the service, with the children joining in at the communion. Refreshments are served afterwards.

Sung Evensong (Book of Common Prayer)

About four times in the year there is an alternative form of Evensong, often following the Ionia pattern.  These are advertised separately.

Café Church

Image of coffee cup for Café ChurchCafé Church is a new type of service being offered in Little Gaddesden on the second Sunday of most months of the year, unless there is a clash which makes it impractical.  The format will be entirely different from our other services, including the Family Service that used to occupy the ‘second Sunday’ slot:

  • Wonderful fresh coffee and pastries upon arrival.
  • Informal seating at tables.
  • Accessible worship on screen.
  • Lively music.
  • Time to think.
  • Time to pray.
  • No formality.
  • Time to discuss (no boring sermon!), just an opportunity to ask questions and share, if you wish, in a non-threatening environment.
  • There will be a separate teaching activity for younger children during part of the service.
  • Service should last no more than 40 minutes.
  • Stay after and finish the pastries!

Café Church is inspired by ‘Reaching New People’ (RNP), one of St Albans’ Diocese’s key initiatives.  In 2020 we are going to explore new ways of reaching people who aren’t currently engaged with the Church, whilst at the same time inspiring, refreshing and enriching all those who are already part of the congregation. We also want to encourage those who used to come to church on a Sunday, but for whatever reason have let churchgoing become less of a priority in their lives, to return.
