Café Church

Image of coffee cup for Café ChurchCafé Church is a new type of service being offered in Little Gaddesden on the second Sunday of most months of the year, unless there is a clash which makes it impractical.  The format is entirely different from our other services, including the Family Service that used to occupy the ‘second Sunday’ slot:

  • Wonderful fresh coffee and pastries upon arrival.
  • Informal seating at tables.
  • Accessible worship on screen.
  • Lively music.
  • Time to think.
  • Time to pray.
  • No formality.
  • Time to discuss (no boring sermon!), just an opportunity to ask questions and share, if you wish, in a non-threatening environment.
  • There will be a separate teaching activity for younger children during part of the service.
  • Service should last no more than 40 minutes.
  • Stay after and finish the pastries!

Café Church is inspired by ‘Reaching New People’ (RNP), one of St Albans’ Diocese’s key initiatives.  We are exploring new ways of reaching people who aren’t currently engaged with the Church, whilst at the same time inspiring, refreshing and enriching all those who are already part of the congregation. We also want to encourage those who used to come to church on a Sunday, but for whatever reason have let churchgoing become less of a priority in their lives, to return.

The Ashridge Chaplency is held by Revd John Russell.  A Eucharist service will be provided on a quarterly basis in the Chapel and will take the place of the midweek communion at Little Gaddesden.

The regular pattern of services is shown below.

Regular Services

The regular pattern of services at Little Gaddesden Church is as follows. Additional services and other changes are shown in the Services Calendar above.

Sunday Mornings
First, Third and Fourth Sundays of the month
9:00am — Sung Eucharist (sometimes with Sunday School during school term time)
Second Sunday of the month
9:00am — Café Church
Fifth Sunday of the Month
9:00am — Joint Parish Communion at St Lawrence, Nettleden

Sunday Evenings
First and Third Sundays of the month
6:00pm — Evensong (Book of Common Prayer) at Nettleden

Thursdays
10:00am — Midweek Holy Communion

There are some exceptions to the regular pattern. For example, our service on the second Sunday is sometimes switched with another Sunday for a particular occasion. Also, from time to time, we hold alternative services such as Taizé evensong. And, of course, there are additional services during busy festivals such as Christmas and Easter and on other special occasions. So please consult the Services Calendar on this page to see the services in the coming days. We try to give as much notice as possible of any changes from the usual.
