Finally, the last excavation for the services between the Hall and the boiler house was dug, the ducts laid and buried and the piles of mud and flint in front of the Ambulatory entrance screen were cleared away. The ground was levelled and a layer of type 1 bedding laid and tamped down, ready for laying the paving stones.

Work on replacing the damaged bricks in the lower courses of the old vestry walls has been proceeding very fitfully, governed by the incessant rain we have been having for the last few weeks. The brief dry spell over the Christmas break was helpful but as soon as it started to rain again the ground turned to liquid mud, which has made work impossible – despite the best efforts of the builders, who have put down boards to work off.

Just as at the beginning we started to build the Hall by excavating for the foundations so in the endgame we are finishing the building with more groundworks.

The doors to the Hall are what are called pocket doors. They were recommended by our architect as being the most suitable type for this situation. They slide right away into slots built into the wall so that the door opening is completely clear with nothing intruding into it.

The brickwork of the original vestry walls had deteriorated very badly at ground level where it met the grass, with hollowed out faces to many bricks, so repairs are necessary.

The buttress on the church wall which the wall of the old Ambulatory had been built around was in a bad way when it was exposed.

The kitchen units were delivered and are now being installed. This should take about five days as there are a lot of units to get in as well as the appliances to fit and sinks to plumb in. We are installing a commercial dishwasher in order to make clearing up after events very efficient. We looked at several other kitchens before designing ours and we were strongly advised that this was the best type of dishwasher to put in, despite the extra initial cost, so we hope it will prove to wash up to its reputation!

The walls have been plastered and dried out and the undercoats of paint are being rolled on. The electricians are wiring up the light fittings and outlets. And last weekend a team of tilers worked non-stop to lay the slate on the floor of the Ambulatory, lobby, kitchen and WC.

The glazing to the Ambulatory has been beautifully detailed. The front door frame is behind the glass so that it is almost invisible. Our architect gave a lot of time and thought to achieve this detail and it is exquisitely minimal. The glass canopy is held elegantly over the door by a couple of stainless steel rods and follows the slope of the roof.

This week we can say that we’re looking at the beginning of the endgame. The windows and doors have arrived on site and are being fitted. Another casualty of Covid, the company supplying them is not able to fit them for some time and we cannot wait. Independent installers have been instructed by the builders and have nearly finished putting them in
